    The Senior Counsel will draft contracts, conform contracts to Earthjustice standards and help to negotiate contract terms with vendors. There will also be some focus on completing implementation of the Ironclad contract management system, expanding use of the platform features to benefit other departments in their work and perhaps integrating the Ironclad with other platforms at use in the organization. The Senior Counsel will also provide support to the General Counsel’s office on a variety of subjects related to compliance and meeting law firm best management practices standards.

    Responsibilities

    Contract Management Platform Oversight and Improvement (10%):

    Complete implementation of the Ironclad contract management platform
    Customize the platform, as necessary
    Oversee collection of currently existing contracts, identifying key contract provisions for calendaring, loading the contracts into the new platform and calendaring critical dates
    Train new users on the platform
    Oversee improvement of reference materials for users

    Contracts (40%):

    Develop training module and train staff on contract processing steps and key provision review
    Review or draft service and product purchase contracts on an as-needed basis
    Review and revise proposed leases and construction (build out) contracts
    Update contract templates as needed
    Put in place or upgrade controls to ensure good contracting practices
    Maintain contract management system, assess performance and make any necessary changes
    As needed, select and supervise outside counsel; occasionally function as the client representative of Earthjustice

    Compliance (50%):

    The Senior Counsel will support General Counsel’s office staff work of managing risk and assuring compliance/best practice implementation at the firm. Those activities may include:

    Conduct research, benchmark and draft organizational policies
    Audit or oversee lobbying registration and reporting
    Review insurance policies, benchmark, evaluate organizational risks/needs, prepare GC for annual insurance renewal
    Partner with Senior Operations Manager to complete, monitor compliance and conduct ongoing research/necessary revisions to physical security project and disaster preparation plans
    Do compliance calendaring; assist with designing any necessary calendaring solution
    Provide support for corporate governance projects
    Provide support to GC’s office on ethics compliance issues
    Lead the project team for a document retention and revision/compliance project
    Provide compliance guidance to leadership on corporate governance, financial structures, investments and other significant organizational issues as needed
    Conduct legal research on a variety of subjects, interpret laws, rulings and regulations and determine how they apply to Earthjustice
    Research, present options, gain consensus, select and retain firm to monitor trademark use
    Prepare and deliver legal training tailored to the needs of the organization
    Perform other duties as assigned

    Salary is based on experience.
    Salary range for San Francisco, CA: $131,200 - $145,800

    Job Requirements: REQUIREMENTS:

    J.D. with strong academic record
    California state Bar admission and good standing
    Minimum of 5 years of successful experience practicing law
    Experience drafting and negotiating contracts with an eye to data security and privacy law

    STAFF ATTORNEY - VOTING

    The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Foundation of Florida seeks a voting-rights attorney. The voting-rights attorney works closely with the other members of the legal team to achieve the organization’s goal of protecting the liberties that define our democracy. This position is located in the organization’s Miami office but includes some travel.

    The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Florida is an affiliate of the national ACLU, a national public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights.  For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has served as the nation’s primary protector of the liberties that define our democracy. The organization implements its vital civil liberties mission in all 50 states in large part through affiliate entities such as the ACLU of Florida. Operating out of four offices—Miami (main), Tampa, Pensacola, and Jacksonville—the Florida affiliate has a budget of over $7 million and 44 staff members, placing it among the larger ACLU affiliates in the nation.  

    The ACLU of Florida, the state’s largest civil rights and civil liberties organization, employs litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education to protect and promote a broad range of constitutional values and individual rights, such as freedom of speech, racial justice, right to privacy, religious liberty, criminal justice reform, voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, disability rights, and immigrants’ rights.  The ACLU of Florida litigates a broad range of complex constitutional cases in federal and state courts through direct representation, filing amicus briefs, and submitting administrative complaints to state and federal agencies.     

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The voting-rights attorney is a staff position within the Affiliate’s Legal Department. The position reports to the Deputy Legal Director. The position is focused on voting rights.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    The primary programmatic focus of this position will be the development of litigation and other legal advocacy projects in the area of voting rights. The staff attorney will:

    • Develop, prepare, and litigate voting-rights cases at all stages in state and federal trial and appellate courts.
    • Engage in pre-litigation, post-litigation, and non-litigation advocacy, including preparing demand letters, conducting settlement negotiations and enforcement, developing advocacy materials and public-education resources, and delivering public testimony.
    • Work closely with and provide policy analysis and legal expertise to non-legal program staff at the ACLU of Florida and ACLU National.
    • Engage regularly with the media on voting-rights issues.

    OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

    In addition to the primary responsibilities above, the staff attorney will also:

    • Develop and strengthen relationships with community partners, coalitions, stakeholders, and affected communities.
    • Prepare and deliver “know your rights” information to affected communities.
    • Respond to the legal needs of affected communities, potentially on an emergency and immediate basis.
    • Participate in legal and advocacy conferences and develop and provide CLE presentations on pertinent topics.
    • Communicate ACLU views and positions to a variety of audiences, including judges, community residents, and policymakers, through public speaking, traditional and social media, and other means.

    At times, the staff attorney may also be called upon to support the ACLU of Florida’s work in areas other than voting rights.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    First and foremost, the candidate must have exceptional analytic, research, and writing skills.

    The only other required qualifications are that the candidate possess a J.D. and that they be a member of the Florida Bar (or able to secure Florida Bar membership within one year of the beginning of their employment).

    While no one person will have all of the qualities enumerated below, the successful candidate will bring many of the following qualifications and attributes:

    • Significant expertise and experience in the area of voting rights.
    • Five or more years of federal district court or appellate litigation experience.
    • Strong and demonstrated commitment to civil rights and civil liberties consistent with the mission and goals of the ACLU.
    • Broad substantive knowledge of constitutional law.
    • Exceptional oral-advocacy skills.
    • Demonstrated experience working in fast-paced environment with a keen ability to simultaneously work on and manage multiple projects and deadlines and set priorities.
    • Enthusiasm, patience, and cultural competence to work cooperatively on a variety of projects with lawyers, organizers, and other staff members, as well as diverse community organizations and coalitions.
    • Experience working and communicating with marginalized or vulnerable communities.
    • Collaborative spirit and a sense of humor.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and professionally with lawyers, paralegals, legal assistants, and clients.
    • A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance.
    • Ability and willingness to travel and work extended hours, including nights and weekends, as needed.
    • Fluency in Spanish or Creole.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    Compensation will be commensurate with experience, within a starting range of $62,000-$83,000. The ACLU of Florida provides excellent benefits, including health and dental insurance with generous vacation, holiday, and sick leave policies, as well as a Defined Contribution 401K Retirement Plan. Base vacation leave is five weeks per year (and six weeks per year after five years).

    The Northwest Office opened in 1987 to enable Earthjustice to take a more active role in preserving the unique natural resources and environment of the Pacific Northwest. Since that time, the Northwest office has undertaken campaigns to protect old growth forests, promote salmon recovery, improve water quality, protect Puget Sound and the Salish Sea and the communities that depend on them, stop coal-fired power plants, prevent the Pacific Northwest from becoming a fossil fuel fossil fuel export hub, and protect farmworkers and communities from toxic pesticides, among other things. We are building out southern resident orca recovery work and partnerships with environmental justice communities in Seattle and Portland. We frequently work in close partnership with Native American Tribes and fence-line communities. The new Staff Attorney would spend a significant portion of their time partnering with environmental justice communities, along with other Northwest attorneys.

    Although the primary focus of the Northwest office is representing environmental and community groups in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, we often take cases with national and international scope. For example, the Northwest office is representing the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline and is litigating numerous cases fighting rollbacks of environmental and health protections by the Trump administration, including a reversal of a proposed ban on a dangerous pesticide, chlorpyrifos, the repeal of the Clean Water Rule and the Dirty Water Rule replacement, and regulations that weaken the Endangered Species Act and National Environmental Policy Act.

    Our office (when open) is located in the heart of downtown Seattle near the federal and state courthouses and the waterfront. Our goal is to produce the highest quality legal work in a diverse, inclusive, supportive, and collegial environment. The Northwest Office has a staff of 16, including 12 attorneys.

    Responsibilities

    Lead complex cases and the full range of litigation tasks, including factual investigation, legal research, discovery, briefing, witness preparation, trials, and oral advocacy.
    Work with clients, other attorneys, and partners to investigate, develop, and litigate cases.
    Devote at least one-third of their docket to partnering with environmental justice groups and working with associate attorneys in doing so. Some of this work will entail advocacy to combat harmful air pollution.
    Work with our media and policy and legislation teams, as well as clients and partners, to leverage legal advocacy to obtain positive change and results.
    Train and mentor associate attorneys, including by building their litigation skills in the course of legal advocacy.
    Job Requirements: Law school graduate and admitted to, or willing to apply for admission to, the Washington State Bar.
    A minimum of six years of litigation experience is required, and 10 or more years of experience is strongly preferred.
    Excellent research, analytic, writing and communication skills; trial skills preferred.
    Experience partnering with environmental justice communities.
    Experience engaging in advocacy to combat harmful air pollution preferred.
    Experience training and mentoring associate attorneys.
    Strong work ethic, initiative, sound judgment.

    The Assistant Town Attorney is a member of the Town Attorney's Office. Work is performed under general direction of the Town Attorney with significant latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. The employee provides legal guidance to the various Town departments, the Town Council, and the Town Advisory Boards and Committees. The work includes legal research and writing on various local government legal issues. Additional responsibilities are drafting and/or reviewing of resolutions, ordinances, contracts, legal pleadings, legal correspondence, and various routine legal documents. The employee shall represent the Town in litigation and administrative proceedings, when necessary. The employee shall act as the Town prosecutor handling municipal ordinance prosecution. This position requires a high level of critical thinking and ingenuity to bring successful resolutions to issues ranging from routine legal matters to unusually complex legal issues that the Town faces.

    Minimum Requirements (Must meet by the closing date of the posting unless otherwise stated)
    • Juris doctor degree from an accredited school of law.
      Minimum of three years of experience in local government law.
      Must possess a license to practice law in the state of Florida and be an attorney at law in good standing in Florida.

    JOB PURPOSE:

    Founded in 2000, the National Crime Victim Law Institute (NCVLI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational and legal institute located at Lewis & Clark Law School in downtown Portland offices. NCVLI’s mission is to actively promote balance and fairness in the justice system through crime victim centered legal advocacy, education, and resource sharing.  We promote crime victims’ rights in criminal, civil, military and administrative justice systems nationwide through litigation (in the form of amicus curiae, occasional direct representation, and legal technical assistance); education through publications and trainings (both in-person and technology-assisted); and public policy development.  NCVLI is funded primarily by government grants and contracts, and this is position is partially grant-funded, the continuation of which is dependent upon renewal of funding.  For more information about NCVLI, visit the website: www.ncvli.org.

    As a member of NCVLI’s leadership team, the Director of Strategic Outreach & Partnerships will lead efforts to design and implement diverse and creative education and outreach initiatives for key audiences and cultivate relationships and strategic partnerships and coalitions in order to extend the impact of NCVLI’s work.  In this position, the Director will be a strategic leader excited by the intersection of legal practice, training, and policy. The Director will represent NCVLI at trainings, public speaking engagements, workshops, conferences and on committees. The Director will oversee the design and implementation of strategic trainings and outreach events on victims’ rights.  To achieve success, the Director will work closely with the Executive Director to develop and manage strategies to foster partner engagement to advance victims’ rights.  This new position will report to the Executive Director and play a pivotal role in NCVLI’s efforts to advance victims’ rights practice and policy through training and collaborations. 

    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Supervision (51%)

    • Responsible for the selection, training, supervision, evaluation, performance management, and discipline of select staff working on training, outreach and strategic activities.
    • Work to develop professional growth and learning opportunities to enhance internal capacities for effective communications, trainings, and outreach.
    • Provide leadership and strategic direction for NCVLI with a focus on culture, mission, and vision.
    • Encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among employees.
    • Establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them.
    • Build and work with diverse teams effectively.

    Education & Outreach (25%)

    • Design and implement strategic trainings and outreach events on victims’ rights for diverse audiences.
    • Oversee and participate in the simultaneous implementation of a wide range of outreach and education initiatives.
    • Work with team to craft communications and messaging for target audiences including advocates, attorneys, volunteers, funders and policymakers.  
    • Collaborate with staff the design and implementation of train-the-trainer type efforts to grow capacity for effective education and outreach both within NCVLI and with partners.
    • Master the use of existing resources, platforms, and programs and regularly seek out and employ new and better tools and techniques for all training and outreach efforts.
    • Write educational pieces on victims’ rights and law as part of efforts (e.g., op-eds, white papers).
    • Occasionally serve as an on-the-record spokesperson for NCVLI to help educate the public and policymakers about victims’ rights.

    Strategy & Partnerships (19%)

    • Stay current on developments in victim law and policy, as well as relevant social science research.
    • Cultivate and steward a portfolio of ~200 influential partners – both individuals and organizations – to advance victims’ rights outreach and educational activities that to position NCVLI to achieve targeted impact goals across law, policy and community awareness domains.
    • Collaborate with other senior staff, board members and alumni to strengthen, deepen, and expand strategic partnerships to advance the mission of NCVLI.
    • Develop and manage strategies for partner engagement to advance victims’ rights.
    • Build and leverage relationships with individuals and organizations in the victim services sector, legal profession and amongst allied professionals.
    • Manage contracted consultants for training and outreach activities. 
    • Collaborate with Executive Director, Board of Directors and Advisory Council to leverage expertise to help advance mission and vision of NCVLI.

    Other duties (5%)

    • Works closely with all staff to advance NCVLI’s mission and ensure all projects are programmatically sound, well-managed, timely implemented and enhance the rights of diverse victim populations, including those who have been historically under- or unserved.
    • Perform other duties as assigned, including contributing to team meetings and retreats, and supporting grant writing, fundraising, and reporting.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • J.D. with five years’ experience post-law school designing, managing, facilitating and evaluating diverse training and/or educational efforts leveraging adult learning theory.
    • Three years’ experience post-law school working in public policy or related field.
    • Two years’ experience supervising other staff, including professional staff.
    • Experience building relationships with leaders in practice, policy, and funder communities.
    • Experience developing and advancing external relations and/or strategic partnerships.
    • Experience synthesizing complex ideas from law and translating for multiple audiences.
    • Demonstrated ability to strategically spearhead projects that are deadline-driven and involve multiple internal and external stakeholders.
    • Ability to work in a small, highly motivated and fast-moving office environment with frequent change, innovation and need for folks to be willing to fill any role needed for the success of the organization and/or project.

    • Existing knowledge of victims’ rights enforcement.
    • Ph.D. or Higher education degree in Adult Learning, Communications or Project Management.

    • Five years’ experience post-law school working in public policy or related field.
    • Four years’ experience supervising other staff, including professional staff.

    Inspector General

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree. At least 10 years of experience as a Federal, State or local law enforcement officer; as a Federal or State court Judge; as a Federal, State or local government attorney; or have ten years of progressive supervisory experience in an investigative public agency similar to an inspector general's office.

    Recruitment Notes

    Miami-Dade County is seeking a progressive, experienced, and results-oriented Inspector General to lead the Office of Inspector General (OIG). The staff includes seasoned investigators, auditors, contract oversight specialists and administrative support totaling 39 positions. The OIG is authorized to detect, investigate and prevent fraud, waste, mismanagement and abuse of power in County projects, programs or contracts, and can carry out these goals while autonomous, independent and insulated from political influences. It is one of a few OIGs in the country that has jurisdiction to investigate officials at any level, including elected officials. The organization and administration of the Office of the Inspector General shall be sufficiently independent to assure that no interference or influence external to the Office adversely affects the independence and objectivity of the Inspector General.

    The candidate should be able to demonstrate their ability to be a leader with vision, able to set strategy for the Office of Inspector General, pursue the mission with integrity and have the ability to engage respectfully with the Board of County Commissioners (Board) and the Administration.

    Additional responsibilities will include but are not limited to: providing direction and supervision for audits, investigations, and management reviews relating to programs and operations. The Inspector General will keep the Board and the Administration informed of fraud, abuses, and deficiencies through written reports. The Inspector General will assess the reliability and validity of the information provided by all sources and ensure that the appropriate resources are allocated between audit, investigative, and other accountability activities. Since 2007, through an Interlocal Agreement between the Miami-Dade Public School District and Miami-Dade County, the Miami-Dade County Inspector General has also served as the Inspector General for the Miami-Dade Public School District.

    For Fiscal Year 2019-20, the County's adopted budget is $8.9 billion dollars. Miami-Dade County is internationally recognized for its achievement in implementing a results-oriented government culture.     Minimum Qualifications:

    The Inspector General shall possess a Bachelor's degree and ten years of experience in any one, or a combination of the following fields:

    Ten years progressive supervisory experience in an investigative public agency similar to an inspector general's office are required.

    Community Action and Human Services Department Legal Advisor
