Welcome to the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women

Lawyers Association Upon Our Legacy of Developing the Whole Lawyer: Heart, Mind, Body & Soul!

June is here! It is time to celebrate the end of school, Summer vacation, and the fathers and father figures who have done so much to help shape our character and propel us to now.

It is also time – on June 28th at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables to be exact – to celebrate completing a phenomenal programming year with the high-powered 2017-2018 GSCBWLA Officers and Board, and welcome our new President, Melba V. Pearson, and her dynamic board.  This year has flown by! While we still have some time left, I would be remiss if I did not say thank you for the opportunity as President of the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association to serve this unparalleled sisterhood with more than a few good men.

As I shared in my 2017 installation remarks, this organization is special because the very process of fulfilling our mission to address the legal, social and economic concerns of women lawyers, the Black community and the community-at-large helps us develop and nurture the whole lawyer – Heart, Mind, Body & Soul! We have worked this year to do just that.

So as we ease into Summer, you can find us on June 6th at the ABA Judicial Intern Opportunity Program’s (JIOP) Miami Reception at Shook Hardy.  The JIOP is the Section of Litigation’s signature summer internship program for diverse law students. This will be a great chance to mentor and mingle. On June 7th we will celebrate MDFAWL’s 2018 Board Installation & Awards at the Four Seasons. You know that too will be a festive time!

The Florida Bar Annual Meeting on June 13th-16th in Orlando will be spectacular as usual, complimented by the very special Trailblazers Legacy Gala on June 16thHosted by the Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter National Bar Association and sponsored by GSCBWLA, among many others, the Gala will honor Black lawyers admitted to The Florida Bar from 1980-1989. This will be history-making.

On June 21st we will co-host a Joint VBA technology-focused CLE. We all have to report those credits, so let us get ahead of the game this reporting cycle.  On June 23rd we are excited to join our friends at the Dade County Bar Association’s 102nd Installation, and on June 24th-26th we will attend the 4th Annual Collaborative Bar Leadership Academy (CBLA) at Greenberg Traurig.  The CBLA is a joint leadership initiative of the ABA and the National Affinity Bar Associations, including the Hispanic National Bar Association, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the National Native American Bar Association, and the National LGBT Bar Association.

We look forward to hosting you on June 28th too! Our Installation is always sensational fun, if I do say so myself.  If we miss you, we will see you at the 2nd Annual Women Lawyers of Color Summit on August 24th-26th at the Ft. Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa.

In Service,

Nikki Lewis Simon
