Welcome to the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women
Greetings GSC Family,
It’s officially the holiday season! We at Gwen Cherry have a full schedule for the first part of this month. We had the pleasure of co-sponsoring an Art Basel opening reception for an exhibit curated by the Hampton Art Lovers. The exhibit was by Elizabeth Catlett — an African American sculptress and artist who chronicled the experiences of African American and Mexican women. Besides her work being visually stunning, she captured the political turmoil of the day as seen through the eyes of women. Learn more and support the exhibit in Historic Overtown here.
Our involvement in Art Basel continued on Sunday 12.9 at 12th & Ocean on Miami Beach, as we raised awareness around women who are often forgotten and voiceless — domestic workers. The campaign is aptly titled #NeverNotWorking. Learn more here: https://miamigirls.org/projects/never-not-working/.
Lastly, on Thursday, we co-hosted the Annual Joint VBA party at Yuca on South Beach. 9 organizations came together to fellowship and celebrate the holidays. Proceeds of the event benefitted Dade Legal Aid and the Guardian Ad Litem program in the Florida Panhandle.
In the midst of the parties and fun, be sure to take time for yourself. Take time to reflect on the year that is ending, and begin the process of setting your intentions for the new year. With clear intentions, we can help each other succeed.
I leave you with the words of James Baldwin: “An identity would seem to be arrived at by the way in which the person faces and uses his experience”..
Rest. Recharge. Reflect.
