The UNVIERSITY OF MIAMI has an exiting opportunity Lecturer, Deputy Director School of Law Litigation Skills Program to work in Miami, Florida.
EDUCATIONAL AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: J.D. required; Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of trial experience at the federal or state level – including pre-trial experience. Candidates must have experience teaching trial practice and advocacy, either in an academic or professional setting. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills required. A candidate should have some demonstrated experience managing and inspiring a team of professionals. A candidate ideally should have some experience with, or interest in, engaging with the larger community of practicing litigators and/or academic trial skills professionals, and be committed to building on the national relevance of the Miami Law Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Deputy Director, in collaboration with the Faculty Director, is responsible for all functions related to daily operations of the Litigations Skills Program, including supervision of a staff of three. The major responsibilities include:
•Work with the Faculty Director to teach Litigation Skills I and develop related course material;
•Coordinate adjunct-led small sections and the final trial for Litigation Skills I;
•Consult with the Faculty Director and Associate Dean for Experiential Learning to recruit and supervise approximately 50 adjunct faculty;
•Engage, and cultivate the law school’s relationship with, the program’s adjunct faculty;
•Oversee, in collaboration with the Faculty Director, the development and teaching of other courses in the Litigation Skills program including Litigation Skills II and the Litigation Skills Certified Legal Intern (CLI) Externship course;
•Work with the coach of the Trial Team to prepare students for trial skills competition;
•Engage with external stakeholders including the practicing litigation community and/or academic trial skills community, and make contributions to the legal profession and/or legal education through activities such as planning or participating in conferences, providing trainings and CLEs, playing leadership roles within professional, bar and community organizations, or writing practice-oriented material;
•Engage in fundraising for the Litigation Skills Program in collaboration with the Dean, Associate Dean for Experiential Learning, and Faculty Director; and
•Engage, mentor and advise students in the program about litigation career pathways.
The current Litigation Skills Program is composed of four major components.
Litigation Skills I is a 6-credit course composed of weekly lectures supplemented by pretrial and trial workshops that each meet once a week. Students learn how to litigate a case from start to finish by developing a full range of both pretrial and trial practice skills such as: interviewing clients, conducting investigations, drafting pleadings, conducting discovery, arguing motions, undertaking negotiations, delivering opening and closing statements, and examining witnesses.
Litigation Skills II is a 3-credit course in advanced litigation where students learn topics such as instruction in jury selection, expert witnesses, and multi-party or multi-claim lawsuits. Students have the option to take either Advanced Civil Litigation Skills or Advanced Criminal Litigation Skills. All courses are taught by leading trial lawyers and judges. Litigation Skills II is open to students who have successfully completed Litigation Skills I.
An additional component of Miami Law's program is that qualified students who complete the Litigation Skills I course can be placed in our six-credit Litigation Skills Externship Placement Program in which they are certified by the Supreme Court of Florida (or other states or Federal courts) to engage in the supervised practice of law. Miami Law's unique Litigation Skills Externship Program provides students in the program with the opportunity to apply the trial and pre-trial skills in an external practice setting. Students may represent clients in criminal and civil matters and argue cases in Circuit, County and Federal courts under the supervision of practicing attorneys. Externs are placed locally, nationally and internationally.
In addition, Miami Law trains a number of Trial Teams that participate in regional and national competitions. With coaching from experienced attorneys, a small group of students are able to further hone their trial skills and compete on a national stage for the opportunity to earn resume- and reputation-enhancing accolades.
The law school also offers a concentration in Litigation and many other courses relevant to litigation practice.
