Job Description: |
Legal Services is seeking a full-time Florida licensed attorney (or pending July 2021 bar results) to work in its Consumer Unit. Our Consumer Rights attorneys leverage an array of federal and state laws in defending debt collection, student loan, and foreclosure claims against low-income consumers, and sue financial institutions, loan servicers, real estate equity scammers, car dealerships, and the U.S. Department of Education. Our attorneys practice in federal courts, including bankruptcy court, and state courts. They also handle appeals and resolve claims in administrative settings.
A sampling of cases handled include representing homeowners in saving their homes and seeking damages after being tricked out of title and in filing Chapter 13 bankruptcies to save clients’ homes from mortgage and association foreclosures. Also, our attorneys assist clients defrauded during the sale, financing, and repossession of their vehicles to seek monetary and injunctive relief, and help clients protect their income from garnishment and unlawful collection efforts. Additionally, our Consumer Rights attorneys assist clients in obtaining administrative student loan discharges, and in seeking relief in federal court when the administrative process is exhausted. The work of the Unit is varied beyond these examples, which provides for interesting and stimulating cases, and is singularly focused on consumer protection.
The attorney will maintain his or her own caseload.
The attorney's duties include drafting pleadings, conducting depositions, negotiating with opposing counsel, and representing clients in court. This Unit involves significant litigation. However, the attorney will also be required to conduct client intake and to potentially spearhead a special project or clinic. Additionally, the attorney will be asked to occasionally participate in client outreach and community education events.
