Description
The essential function of the position within the organization is to conduct and coordinate legal research activities at the trial court level. This is a highly responsible position that assists trial court judges on a variety of case issues, including pre-trial and motions; post-conviction relief (3.800, 3.850); prisoner petitions, summary judgments; motions to suppress the evidence; and discovery. The assigned work involves considerable interpretations and judgment in the analysis of legal issues in the area(s) of criminal, and civil law as well as drafting orders and reviewing briefs. This positions supervises, coordinates work assignments, and evaluates performance of assigned employees. This position works under the general direction of the General Counsel.
Work will be performed in-person/on-site at a courthouse location. This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work/onsite schedule as outlined by existing Circuit policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Directs and supervises staff including employee performance evaluations; reviews and approves timesheets and leave requests.
- Reviews files, legal briefs, memoranda of law, proposed orders, and other related documentation in order to advise judges in a variety of legal areas.
- Conducts research of substantive and procedural legal matters; drafts/prepares documents, such as opinions, judgments, post-conviction orders, orders concerning extraordinary writs, or memoranda.
- Monitors death penalty reports, researches judicial ethical issues or issues concerning recusal and disqualification; provides assistance to the circuit General Counsel with special projects, as needed.
- Attends court hearings and trials, as directed.
- Tracks work production of Staff Attorneys.
- Attends staff and other professional meetings to exchange information.
- Attends technical or professional workshops, seminars, and conferences to improve professional skills.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Five (5) years of experience in the practice of law or as a law clerk in an appellate or trial court.
- Two (2) years of managerial, administrative, or supervisory experience.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Member in good standing with the Florida Bar.
- Additional experience in the area of criminal or probate law preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
- Reviews monthly status reports of death row inmates.
- Instructs and trains Attorneys.
- Reads and interprets highly complex professional materials; and drafts memos and orders.
- Ability to perform work involving the application of principles of legal practice to diagnose or define problems.
- Ability to make decisions with very serious impact.
- Ability to utilize machines, such as computers, copiers and telephones.
Physical Demands
Work involves a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, talking, listening, and reaching with hands and arms. Must be able to transfer up to 10 pounds.
Licenses Certifications
Membership in good standing with the Florida Bar required.
