Staff Attorney ‐ Consumer Rights

Legal Services seeks an attorney to work in its Consumer Rights Unit. This Unit provides the full range of legal services to assist homeowners at risk of mortgage foreclosure, and to defend mortgage foreclosure actions, including initiation of Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases, loan modifications and rescission actions pursuant to the Home Owner Equity Protection Act and the Truth in Lending Act, representation to resolve mortgage fraud problems such as mortgage cancellation and rescission, quiet title actions and Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act cases.

The Unit also protects people from unfair financial practices by representing consumers in debt collection defense cases, defending against improper garnishment of wages or bank accounts and representing in cases involving used automobiles with a focus on financing, unfair and deceptive sales practices, warranty and odometer law violations.

The attorney will be responsible for his or her own caseload.

The attorney's duties include drafting pleadings, conducting depositions, and representing clients in court. This Unit involves significant litigation. However, the attorney will also be required to conduct client intake, conduct home visits, attend community education events, and participate in client outreach. We are seeking an attorney with a commitment to and passion for the rights of low‐income clients.

Litigation experience required. Bilingual capability (Spanish or Haitian Creole) preferred. Excellent benefits and salary. EOE.
