Job Title: Associate Attorney, Fossil Fuels Program
    Job Location: Chicago, IL
    Job Type: Full-time
Compensation: Salary is based on experience and location. Salary range in Chicago, IL: 1-5 years $85,100 - $104,400
    Job Category Attorney
Job Description: Earthjustice is the premier nonprofit environmental law organization. We take on the biggest, most precedent-setting cases across the country. We wield the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people’s health; to preserve magnificent places and wildlife; to advance clean energy; and to combat climate change. We partner with thousands of groups, supporters, individuals and communities to engage the critical environmental issues of our time, and bring about positive change. We are guided by a passionate, ambitious vision for the future for people and our planet: until justice stands for all, we will never rest. We are here because the earth needs a good lawyer.
Founded in 1971, Earthjustice has a distinguished track record of achieving significant, lasting environmental protections. We achieve this by hiring people who share a passion for justice and a healthy environment. Our headquarters are in San Francisco with offices in Anchorage, Juneau, Los Angeles, Tallahassee, Honolulu, New York, Philadelphia, Denver, Seattle, Bozeman, Miami and Washington, DC.
Earthjustice is accepting applications for two Associate Attorneys to join our Fossil Fuels Program. We use the power of the law to challenge the onslaught of new oil and gas infrastructure development that threatens climate, communities and our environment. This role will work cross-regionally with a focus on the Ohio River Valley, with the position based in Chicago, Illinois.
At a time when we desperately need to reduce greenhouse emissions, the oil and gas industry is aggressively expanding fossil fuel infrastructure, locking us into decades of future fossil fuel use and directly harming communities already hardest hit by climate disruption. Earthjustice’s Fossil Fuels program uses litigation, administrative advocacy, and partnership to advance an end to U.S. oil and gas extraction and production, and stop new infrastructure (e.g., petrochemical facilities, export terminals and pipelines).
The Associate Attorney program is designed to help attorneys who are in the early stages of their careers to develop into thoughtful, professional, and effective advocates skilled in the various phases of public interest litigation. The term for the associate position is three-years with the potential for an extension.
    Responsibilities:
-Work with program staff and clients to investigate, develop, and litigate cases.
-Participate in the full range of tasks involved in litigation, including factual investigation, legal research, memo writing, comments, briefing, discovery, and oral advocacy.
-Review and analyze administrative records and technical documents, and prepare comments on proposed agency actions, permits, and environmental review documents.
-Engage with clients, coalition partners, and experts, as well as internal communications and legislative staff.
-Hire and supervise law students who work at Earthjustice as interns or clerks.
    Job Requirements: Qualifications:
-Admitted to, or eligible for admission to the Illinois Bar.
-1-5 years of post-graduate litigation and/or clerkship experience.
-Excellent legal research, writing and analytical skills.
-Strong work ethic and initiative, and sound yet creative judgment.
-Ability to work well both independently and with a team.
-Strong desire to fight for the right of all to a healthy environment.
-Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
-Commitment to help create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.
-Willingness to contribute to recruiting, hiring, developing and retaining a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Job Title: Associate Attorney, Toxic Exposure & Health Program
    Job Location: New York
    Job Type: Full-time
Compensation: Salary range in New York, NY: $87,400-$109,900
    Job Category Attorney
Job Description: Earthjustice seeks an Associate Attorney to join the Toxic Exposure & Health Program. This position will begin in January 2022 and located in New York, NY.
Earthjustice is the premier nonprofit environmental law organization. We take on the biggest, most precedent-setting cases across the country. We wield the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people’s health; to preserve magnificent places and wildlife; to advance clean energy; and to combat climate change. We partner with thousands of groups to engage on the critical environmental issues of our time and bring about positive change. We are here because the earth needs a good lawyer.
Founded in 1971, Earthjustice has a distinguished track record of achieving significant, lasting environmental protections. We achieve this by hiring people who share a passion for justice and a healthy environment. Our headquarters is in San Francisco with offices in Anchorage, Juneau, Los Angeles, Tallahassee, Miami, Honolulu, New York, Philadelphia, Denver, Chicago, Seattle, Bozeman, and Washington, DC.
The Associate Attorney position is a three-year position with the opportunity for extension. Many Associates have gone on to other positions within Earthjustice and with other public interest organizations. The Associate Attorney program is designed to help attorneys who are in the early stages of their careers to develop into thoughtful, professional, and effective advocates skilled in the various phases of public interest litigation. As Associate Attorneys gain experience, they gradually take on more independent responsibility for their cases, but Associates work throughout their tenure under the supervision of a Senior Attorney or the Managing Attorney.
The work of the Toxic Exposure & Health Program is at the heart of Earthjustice’s mission to defend the right of all people to live, work, and raise children in a healthy environment. The attorney selected for this position will work closely with other professionals (attorneys, scientists, policy analysts, communications experts) seeking to protect families, communities, and populations—especially those most exposed or susceptible to harm—from toxic chemicals in the workplace, in consumer products, in the built environment, and in the outside environment. The attorney also will partner with Earthjustice staff who focus on securing clean air, clean water, and sustainable food and agriculture.
Exposure to toxic chemicals is linked to chronic diseases and health conditions, many of which are on the rise as toxic exposures have increased. The goal of the Toxic Exposure & Health Program is to use litigation and other legal advocacy to ensure that all people have safe workplaces and neighborhoods, access to safe drinking water and food, and live in homes that are free of hazardous chemicals. In recent years, attorneys doing this work have won a groundbreaking lawsuit requiring EPA to improve its lead hazard standards, successfully petitioned the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban a toxic class of flame retardants in consumer products, prevailed in a challenge to rules that would have allowed EPA to ignore the risks posed by legacy uses of toxic substances, such as lead in drinking water pipes, when it conducts chemical risk evaluations, and sued the United States Department of Defense for incinerating toxic PFAS chemicals without environmental review.
Our goal is to produce the highest quality legal work in a diverse, inclusive, supportive, and collegial environment.
Due to Covid-19, Earthjustice staff are currently working remotely from approved locations through January 18, 2022.
    Responsibilities:
Associate attorneys perform a range of litigation and advocacy-related tasks that can include:
-Work closely with Earthjustice attorneys, scientists, and professional staff to build cases and support policies that serve a diverse set of clients.
-Participate in the full range of tasks involved in administrative advocacy and complex litigation, including factual investigation, legal research, memo writing, briefing, and oral advocacy.
-Develop and engage in legal advocacy, including draft and review legislation; draft rulemaking petitions, comments to agencies, letters, fact sheets and other materials; and participate in coalition meetings and events.
-Interact with clients and work with experts to develop a clear understanding of the facts involved in each case and, ultimately, to support our litigation goals.
-Represent Earthjustice on telephone calls and at meetings with clients, partners, co-counsel, and experts.
-Handle other legal work to further the goals of the Toxic Exposure & Health program
-Develop skills required to serve as spokesperson with print and other media.
-Assist with hiring and supervision of student law clerks.
    Job Requirements: Qualifications:
-Law school graduate and admitted to, or qualified and willing to apply for admission to, the New York State Bar.
    -0-5 years of litigation experience.
    -Science background preferred.
-Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
-Strong work ethic, good judgment, initiative, and creativity.
-Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations.
-Ability and desire to contribute to the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.
-Commitment to public interest work and a passion for the role of Earthjustice and its mission.

Job Title: Senior Attorney, Rocky Mountain Regional Office
    Job Location: Denver, CO
    Job Type: Full-time
Compensation: Salary depends on experience and location. Salary range in Denver, CO: $141,300+
    Job Category Attorney
Job Description: Earthjustice is the nation’s premier nonprofit environmental law organization. We take on the biggest, most precedent-setting cases across the country. We wield the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people’s health; to preserve magnificent places and wildlife; to advance clean energy; and to combat climate change. We partner with thousands of groups, supporters, individuals and communities to engage the critical environmental issues of our time and bring about positive change. We are here because the earth needs a good lawyer.
Founded in 1971, Earthjustice has a distinguished track record of achieving significant, lasting environmental protections. We achieve this by hiring those who share a passion for justice and a healthy environment for all. Our headquarters are in San Francisco with thirteen offices across the U.S., including the Denver office.
Earthjustice’s senior attorneys are experienced attorneys who, on behalf of our clients, develop, file, and litigate cases that align with the goals and needs of the program or regional office in which they work. Attorneys in the Denver office handle a wide range of litigation arising primarily in the Intermountain West and Southwest. Our current docket focuses on: (1) protecting public lands and wildlife from fracking, mining, and other threats; (2) transitioning Colorado and Arizona from reliance on dirty fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy; and (3) defending disproportionately impacted and tribal communities from pollution and other environmental harm. The attorney selected for this position may contribute to the work in any of the three program areas, but in the near term can expect to focus on the development of litigation and advocacy to protect disproportionately impacted communities from toxic pollution and the effects of fossil fuel development and use, and to partner with communities on transitioning to a more equitable and sustainable transportation system. We compensate our senior attorneys based on their geography and years of legal experience.
Our practice increasingly emphasizes a mentorship culture for staff at all levels, and we expect that every senior attorney will help nurture the development of early career attorneys and other staff. Senior attorneys also supervise associate attorneys, fellows, and litigation assistants in connection with their work on particular projects and will be asked to serve as the formal supervisor for one or more team members.
The Rocky Mountain office is located in the heart of downtown Denver near the federal and state courthouses, public transportation, Coors Field (home of the Colorado Rockies baseball team), and the vibrant LoDo, RiNo, and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. We are also a bike-friendly office, located near many of Denver’s bike paths. We strive to produce the highest quality legal work in a diverse, inclusive, supportive, and collegial environment.

-Collaborate in team problem solving, litigation strategy, and project management.
-Provide mentoring and supervision to more junior lawyers, interns and litigation assistants.
-Manage relationships with outside co-counsel, clients, and coalition partners.
-Integrate communications and legislative advocacy into litigation and other legal strategies.
-Contribute to efforts to ensure a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences
    Job Requirements: Qualifications:
-At least six years of litigation experience, with experience in the role of lead trial or appellate counsel.
-Proven research, analysis, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
