MIAMI – The Third District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission has been asked to provide Gov. Ron DeSantis with nominees for the vacancy on the Third District Court of Appeal resulting from the resignation, effective Aug. 31, 2020, of Judge Vance E. Salter. The Commission seeks and encourages a broad, diverse and qualified pool of applicants.

Application deadline
The deadline for applying to the Commission is Thursday, June 4, at 5 p.m. (EDT). Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

Qualifications of applicants
In order to be eligible to assume the office of judge on the Third District Court of Appeal, applicants must be members of The Florida Bar for the preceding 10 years, registered voters, and must reside in the territorial jurisdiction at the time of assuming office.

Instructions for submission
The current Judicial Application form must be used and can be downloaded in Word from Gov. Ron DeSantis’ website. Applicants must ensure they are using the correct and current form. Applicants must provide the following:

  • One original electronic version in PDF format of the signed and completed application.
  • One electronic version in PDF format of the redacted copy of the signed and completed application excluding all exempt information under Chapter 119 of the Florida Statutes or other applicable public records law.

Both electronic copies should be sent by email to each of the nine commissioners listed below.

Complete, signed original and redacted applications must be submitted electronically by the deadline. A photograph is encouraged but not required. To assist the Judicial Nominating Commission in its review of applications, all questions in the application must be fully and completely answered. In addition, applications should include current and accurate contact information for themselves, as well as the judges, co-counsel, opposing counsel and references included in their applications. If there is requested information missing from an application, the Judicial Nominating Commission will consider the applicant’s lack of effort in submitting a complete application.

Organizational meeting
After receiving applications, the Commission will hold an organizational meeting by telephone on Friday, June 5, at 4 p.m. (EDT). The interview schedule, including whether the interviews will be conducted in-person or via a web-based video conferencing tool, will be discussed and announced to the public following the meeting. The Commission may take up other matters as appropriate.
