    Earthjustice is seeking to fill a staff attorney position in the California Regional Office. The staff attorney can be housed in either the San Francisco or Los Angeles office. For this position, the attorney selected will generally focus on litigation and other advocacy in our efforts to protect the invaluable natural resources of California; remove our dependence on fossil fuels, with a particular focus on oil and gas; and work with partners and frontline communities to ensure all have a right to clean air, clean water, and healthy lives and ecosystems, with a particular focus on pesticides and other chemical pollution. The staff attorney will work closely with our existing team of attorneys, a Research and Policy Analyst, policy advocates in Sacramento, a regional communications strategist, and a professional support team, in addition to other dedicated staff from other parts of the organization. Additionally, staff attorneys are expected to help nurture the development of early career attorneys and other staff. Staff attorneys oversee the work of more junior staff in connection with their work on particular projects, and may be asked to serve as the formal supervisor for one or more members of the junior staff.
    Responsibilities
    Coordinate the development and execution of legal advocacy strategies to support program goals in collaboration with attorneys, policy staff and communications staff as appropriate.

    STAFF ATTORNEY – CRIMINAL JUSTICE

    The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Foundation of Florida seeks a criminal-justice attorney. The criminal-justice attorney works closely with the other members of the legal team to achieve the organization’s goal of protecting the liberties that define our democracy. This position is located in Orlando but includes some travel. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

    The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Florida is an affiliate of the national ACLU, a national public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights.  For more than 100 years, the ACLU has served as the nation’s primary protector of the liberties that define our democracy. The organization implements its vital civil liberties mission in all 50 states in large part through affiliate entities such as the ACLU of Florida. Operating out of four offices—Miami (main), Tampa, Pensacola, and Jacksonville—the Florida affiliate has a budget of over $8 million and 55 staff members, placing it among the larger ACLU affiliates in the nation. 

    The ACLU of Florida, the state’s largest civil rights and civil liberties organization, employs litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education to protect and promote a broad range of constitutional values and individual rights, such as freedom of speech, racial justice, right to privacy, religious liberty, criminal justice reform, voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, disability rights, and immigrants’ rights.  The ACLU of Florida litigates a broad range of complex constitutional cases in federal and state courts through direct representation, filing amicus briefs, and submitting administrative complaints to state and federal agencies.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The criminal-justice attorney is a staff position within the Affiliate’s Legal Department. The position reports to the Legal Director. The position is focused on criminal justice reform.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    The primary programmatic focus of this position will be the development of litigation and other legal advocacy projects in the area of criminal justice reform. The staff attorney will:

    • Develop, prepare, and litigate criminal justice cases at all stages in state and federal trial and appellate courts.
    • Engage in pre-litigation, post-litigation, and non-litigation advocacy, including preparing demand letters, conducting settlement negotiations and enforcement, developing advocacy materials and public-education resources, and delivering public testimony.
    • Work closely with and provide policy analysis and legal expertise to non-legal program staff at the ACLU of Florida and ACLU National.
    • Engage regularly with the media on criminal-justice issues.

    OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

    In addition to the primary responsibilities above, the staff attorney will also:

    • Develop and strengthen relationships with community partners, coalitions, stakeholders, and affected communities.
    • Prepare and deliver “know your rights” information to affected communities.
    • Respond to the legal needs of affected communities, potentially on an emergency and immediate basis.
    • Participate in legal and advocacy conferences and develop and provide CLE presentations on pertinent topics.
    • Communicate ACLU views and positions to a variety of audiences, including judges, community residents, and policymakers, through public speaking, traditional and social media, and other means.

    At times, the staff attorney may also be called upon to support the ACLU of Florida’s work in areas other than criminal justice reform.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    First and foremost, the candidate must have exceptional analytic, research, and writing skills.

    The only other required qualifications are that the candidate possess a J.D. and that they be a member of the Florida Bar (or able to secure Florida Bar membership within one year of the beginning of their employment).

    While no one person will have all of the qualities enumerated below, the successful candidate will bring many of the following qualifications and attributes:

    • Significant expertise and experience in the area of criminal-justice reform.
    • Five or more years of federal district court or appellate litigation experience.

    • Exceptional oral-advocacy skills.
    • Demonstrated experience working in fast-paced environment with a keen ability to simultaneously work on and manage multiple projects and deadlines and set priorities.
    • Enthusiasm, patience, and cultural competence to work cooperatively on a variety of projects with lawyers, organizers, and other staff members, as well as diverse community organizations and coalitions.
    • Experience working and communicating with marginalized or vulnerable communities.
    • Collaborative spirit and a sense of humor.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and professionally with lawyers, paralegals, legal assistants, and clients.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    Compensation will be commensurate with experience, within a starting range of $62,000-$83,000. Base vacation leave is five weeks per year.

    Contract Staff Attorney

    Position Overview:

    The purpose of this position is to provide civil legal assistance to eligible low income and elderly persons approved by program policies and priorities in areas such as Victims of Crime. The Attorney will provide civil legal assistance to victims of all crimes including but not limited to those provided on an emergency basis, where reasonable and where the need arises as a direct result to victimization (except torts).

    The contract Attorney will work under our Victims of Crime Act Grant and Allegany Grant. The Attorney must have experience from 3-5 years dealing with Family law.  

    Essential Functions:

    1. Interviews, certifies eligibility and identifies the legal problems of FRLS clients within a specific area of law and provides clients with appropriate legal assistance in the form of advice, referrals, or actual representation.

    2. Participates in outreach.

    3. Represents clients in court and before administrative agencies as accepted.

    4. Provides documentation, statistical information and other records as required by the Managing Attorney, Deputy Director or Executive Director.

    5. Participates in case acceptance meetings.

    6. Participates in training to keep up CLE’s and required and legally relevant training as may be provided by the program and as mandated by Florida Bar rules.

    7. Adheres to office hours, exhibits a strong work ethic and excellent time management skills, communicates and treats clients and staff with courtesy and respect, provides constructive feedback to other advocates (including paralegals) on cases discussed.

    8. Serves as a role model to support staff by promoting the values of hard work, high quality advocacy and treating others with courtesy and respect.

    9. Attempts to ensure accessibility of the local office(s) when necessary by serving clients, including rural clients, non-English speaking clients and client with disabilities.

    10. Promotes good relations with public, including client groups, service providers, press, and private bar, attending/speaking at local meetings as appropriate and approved by the Managing Attorney, Deputy Director and/or Executive Director.

    11. Develops and maintains familiarity with FRLS policies, as well as requirements of LEGAL SERVICES CORPORATION, CSC and other funders, and adheres to those policies and requirements.

    12. Maintains accurate follow-up system to review cases when needed.

    13. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    1. Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school.

    2. Barred in Florida required.

    3. Knowledge of State and Federal court procedures preferred.

    4. Some knowledge of the legal system, commitment to the mission of FRLS and compassion for the clients.

    5. Ability to forge positive relationships with prospects and colleagues.

    6. Good organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

    7. Ability to work collaboratively, yet independently.

    8. Must be able to effectively and efficiently maximize existing resources.

    9. Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). Knowledge of CMS a plus.

    10. Must be able to effectively work in high-pressure situations which involve deadlines.

    11. Bilingual English and Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred, but not required.

    Working Conditions:

    Position operates in a professional office environment.

    Must be willing to travel.
