    Staff Attorney - HIM Unit

    MAIN OFFICE

    Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., (Legal Services) seeks a staff attorney with a commitment to and passion for the rights of low-income clients. The attorney will be responsible for his or her own caseload and will be required to conduct client intake - both on the phone and in-person and home visits, as well as community education and client outreach events. The attorney will represent clients mainly in administrative hearings, including unemployment compensation; draft legal memos; and represent clients with public benefits cases, including Medicaid and Food Stamps.

    Staff Attorney - Mortgage Foreclosure Unit

    Main Office

    Legal Services seeks an attorney to work in its Homeowner and Consumer Rights Project. This Project provides the full range of legal services to assist homeowners at risk of mortgage foreclosure, and to defend mortgage foreclosure actions, including initiation of Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases, loan modifications and rescission actions pursuant to the Home Owner Equity Protection Act and the Truth in Lending Act, representation to resolve mortgage fraud problems such as mortgage cancellation and rescission, quiet title actions and Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act cases.

    The project also protects people from unfair financial practices by representing consumers in debt collection defense cases, defending against improper garnishment of wages or bank accounts and representing in cases involving used automobiles with a focus on financing, unfair and deceptive sales practices, warranty and odometer law violations.

    The attorney will be responsible for his or her own caseload.

    The attorney's duties include drafting pleadings, conducting depositions, and representing clients in court. This project involves significant litigation. However, the attorney will also be required to conduct client intake, home visits, and client outreach and attend community education events.     AFFORDABLE HOUSING/COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 

    MIAMI, FLORIDA 

    Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. (Legal Services) seeks a 0‐3 year staff attorney for the Affordable Housing and Community Economic Development Unit (CED) with a commitment to and passion for the rights of the low income community. 

    The CED Unit assists eligible non‐profit corporations and community groups in creating and preserving affordable housing in Miami‐Dade County. In addition the CED Unit provides general corporate counsel to non‐profit corporations engaged in job creation, the development of community based development strategies, educational services to the low‐income youth, and social and economic justice in the low income communities of Miami‐Dade County.  

    Attorneys  in  this  unit  provide  counsel  in  the  areas  of  real  estate  development  including  pre‐development  coordination  and  title  and  loan  closings,  the  drafting  and  negotiation  of  contracts, affordable  housing  financing  (public  and  private),  regulatory  representation  and  negotiations  with governmental  authorities,  advice  and  counsel  with  regard  to  public  and  private  funding  for  capital projects, corporate, and tax advice, corporate formation, including incorporation, obtaining tax‐exempt status and organizational structuring. 

    The attorney will be responsible for his or her own caseload but will have ample supervision. Staff

    Job Responsibilities:

    Insure the timely and accurate completion of residential modification loan and other government homeowner assistance applications; interviewing clients in person and over the phone; working on legal files as directed by attorneys.

    Required Skills:

    • Minimum 2 years residential real estate documentation experience or Associate’s degree

    • Strong mortgage modification processing or paralegal experience a plus

    • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be highly motivated

    • Must have good interpersonal skills

    • Must be well organized and a self-starter

    • Must be able to multi-task and work well under tight time constraints with high volume

    • Spanish or Haitian Creole fluency preferred
