COMMITTEE SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR PUBLIC MEMBER SEAT ON THE FLORIDA BOARD OF BAR EXAMINERS

TALLAHASSEE – Members of the public are invited to volunteer on or before March 26, 2018, for one three-year term on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, the administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Florida that handles matters of bar admission. The Supreme Court of Florida will appoint one public member to serve on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. The Board ensures that applicants have met the requirements of the Rules with regard to character and fitness, education and technical competence prior to recommending to the Supreme Court of Florida an applicant’s admission to The Florida Bar.

A public member volunteer should possess education or work-related experience such as educational testing, accounting, statistical analysis, medicine, psychology, or related sciences. A bachelor’s degree is required. Lawyers are not eligible. 

Board members of the Bar Examiners must be able to attend approximately ten meetings a year in various Florida locations, with travel and subsistence expenses reimbursed. Board members should be willing and able to devote the equivalent of 3-4 days’ work a month, or up to 350 or more hours per year on Board business, depending on committee assignments. 

Board members should be interested in seeking to improve the examination and its administration, and to evaluate carefully the character and fitness of applicants seeking admission to the Bar. Board members should be free of adverse interests, conflicting duties, or inconsistent obligations that may interfere or appear to interfere with the proper administration of the Board’s mandate from the Court.

The vacancy will occur on Nov. 1, 2018, with the expiration of the term of Robert D. Shaw, Jr., of Orlando.

THE FLORIDA BAR SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR APPOINTMENTS TO THE FLORIDA BOARD OF BAR EXAMINERS

Lawyer applicants are being sought to fill three vacancies on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, the administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Florida that handles matters of bar admission. A joint screening committee of Florida Bar Board of Governors members and Board of Bar Examiners members will recommend nine nominees for three lawyer vacancies at its May 18, 2018, meeting. The nominations will then be forwarded to the Supreme Court to fill three five-year terms commencing Nov. 1, 2018, and expiring on Oct. 31, 2023.

Attorney members must have been a member of The Florida Bar for at least five years. They must be practicing lawyers with scholarly attainments and have an affirmative interest in legal education and requirements for admission to the Bar. Appointment or election to the bench at any level of the court system will disqualify any applicant. Law professors or trustees are ineligible.

Board members of the Bar Examiners must be able to attend approximately ten meetings a year in various Florida locations. Supreme Court’s Commission on Professionalism & Civility: Two lawyers to serve four-year terms on this 23-member commission commencing July 1, 2018. The Commission acts as a steering and long-range planning commission for the creation and implementation of programs promoting the ideals and values of justice within the legal system, and to instill those ideals of character, civility, competence, and commitment of professionalism in all those persons serving therein. The commission oversees the development of judicial professionalism programs and the teaching of professionalism in law schools. In addition, it establishes the policies of the Bar’s Center for Professionalism and acts as the Center’s governing board.

THE FLORIDA BAR BOARD OF GOVERNORS SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR APPOINTMENTS TO BE FILLED IN MAY

The Florida Bar Board of Governors makes several special appointments each year. The Board is currently seeking applicants for the following vacancies to be filled during its May 20, 2018, meeting.

American Bar Association House of Delegates: Two lawyers (one under-36 delegate) to serve two-year terms commencing August 2018, at the conclusion of the ABA Annual Meeting. Applicants must also be ABA members.

Florida Legal Services, Inc. Board of Directors: Five lawyers to serve two-year terms commencing July 1, 2018. This is a 21-member board that provides judicial advocacy through co-counseling with local program attorneys and volunteer pro bono attorneys and provides legislative and administrative advocacy on policies impacting the legal rights of the poor, as well as providing civil legal assistance to indigent persons who would not otherwise have the means to obtain a lawyer.

Florida Lawyers Assistance, Inc. Board of Directors: Five lawyers to serve three-year terms commencing July 1, 2018. This 15-member Board assists the legal community in securing counseling and treatment for emotional and chemical dependency problems for lawyers.

Florida Medical Malpractice Joint Underwriting Association Board of Governors: One lawyer to serve a two-year term commencing July 1, 2018. This is a nine-member board of governors that develops a means of obtaining loss and expense experience in medical malpractice issues.

The Business Law Section Fellowship Program

The Business Law Section of The Florida Bar (the “Section”) consists of numerous active committees and an Executive Council with more than 60 members. The Section is committed to recruiting young lawyers and diverse lawyers to join, participate (and ultimately serve in leadership positions) in the Section.

The Section has implemented a Fellowship Program to provide a two-year subsidy to six qualified applicants who express an interest in becoming active in the substantive work and leadership of the Section. During their participation in the Fellowship Program, selected Fellows will receive leadership training and work closely with leading attorneys in the Business Law field. At the end of their Fellowship term, we are confident all Fellows will find the program enhanced their personal and professional development. 

The Inclusion/Mentoring/Fellowships Committee is a diverse group of members of The Florida Bar, including judges, academics and private practitioners who are charged with the task of fostering an inclusive environment within the Business Law Section so that all members are motivated to contribute to the goals of the section and succeed professionally. In fulfilling the charge of fostering a more inclusive environment, the committee serves as a key strategist for increasing the number of diverse members of The Florida Bar involved in section activities and plumbing the educational pipelines into the profession for greater diversity. The committee is a catalyst for professional development and leadership opportunities within the section for diverse members. Through its work and programs, the committee provides a forum for members to address diversity and inclusion issues and build networks for change in our section and the legal profession.
