    Duties:

    The United States Attorney's Office, Middle District of Florida (MDFL), is seeking an experienced attorney interested in working in our Appellate Division responsible for handling criminal and civil appeals. The MDFL is headquartered in Tampa and has branch offices in Orlando, Jacksonville, Fort Myers and Ocala.     The candidate selected for this vacancy will be responsible for handling criminal appeals and civil appeals on behalf of the United States and its agencies, almost exclusively in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Appellate AUSAs draft briefs, motions, and responses and present oral argument before the Eleventh Circuit; these responsibilities require appellate AUSA to evaluate district-court proceedings, to analyze opposing briefs, to conduct legal research, and to develop compelling legal arguments, both orally and in writing. Appellate AUSAs also advise other AUSAs in the office on legal issues and strategies.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Applicants should have excellent academic credentials and some litigation experience, preferably at least three years. Applicants also should be computer literate, possess superior oral and written communication skills, have strong character and excellent interpersonal skills, have the capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment, and have a strong commitment to public service.

    Exposure to toxic chemicals is linked to chronic diseases and health conditions, many of which are on the rise as toxic exposures have increased. The goal of the Toxic Exposure & Health Program is to use litigation and other legal advocacy to ensure that all people have safe workplaces and neighborhoods, access to safe drinking water and food, and live in homes that are free of hazardous chemicals. In recent years, attorneys doing this work have won a groundbreaking lawsuit requiring EPA to improve its lead hazard standards, successfully petitioned the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban a toxic class of flame retardants in consumer products, prevailed in a challenge to rules that would have allowed EPA to ignore the risks posed by legacy uses of toxic substances, such as lead in drinking water pipes, when it conducts chemical risk evaluations, and sued the United States Department of Defense for incinerating toxic PFAS chemicals without environmental review.

    Legal Services of Greater Miami and its 30 lawyers have provided legal representation to low-income communities for 56 years. The firm is a leader in the legal aid community and has been recognized for its creative and aggressive advocacy for its clients. 

    Legal Services is seeking a full-time Florida licensed attorney with a minimum of 5-years’ experience to work in its Health and Income Maintenance Unit. In addition to the essential functions and responsibilities of a Staff Attorney, the Senior Attorney is responsible for assisting the Advocacy Director of the assigned Unit in the development, supervision, leadership, and substantive advocacy of the Unit. The Senior Attorney is the back up to the Advocacy Director, performs all Advocacy Director duties in the absence of the Advocacy Director, and is a member of management. The Senior Attorney performs some or all of the following responsibilities as determined by the Advocacy Director based on the needs of the Unit. 

    Assist Advocacy Director with day-to-day Unit operations by supervising assigned Unit staff; providing clear, meaningful instructions to casehandlers and law clerks regarding case handling and intake-related questions; reviewing advice-only intake cases; and resolving conflicts. 

    Conduct administrative duties as needed, including but not limited to preparing intake schedules. 

    Effectively and efficiently run case review as requested, making appropriate case acceptance decisions. 

    Assist Advocacy Director to ensure compliance with all grants and contracts assigned to the Unit. 

    Direct Unit projects, including coordination of the development and implementation of projects, and providing guidance and instruction to staff assigned to oversee projects, so as to deliver high quality services and achieve project goals in a timely manner. 

    Identify cross-Unit issues, and cooperatively work with other Units to meet the legal needs of clients. 

    Assist Advocacy Director lead the Unit in developing strategies for the delivery of creative, effective advocacy. 

    A minimum of 2-years’ experience in supervising staff with general knowledge of public benefits; healthcare litigation a plus.

    Legal Services recently received funding from Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins to represent tenants facing eviction who live in Commission District 5. Because evictions have short deadlines, this project involves fast-paced litigation, often responding to emergencies, and requires significant negotiation skills. The attorney would also be required to conduct client intake, conduct home visits, conduct education workshops for tenants, work with pro bono attorneys, complete administrative tasks, and participate in client outreach.
